New Exhibit portrays Downtown Hinsdale: 100 Years Ago
Can you tell which buildings in downtown Hinsdale were here 100 years ago? The newest special exhibit at the Hinsdale Historical Museum will
show you that, and much more. Downtown Hinsdale: 100 Years Ago takes visitors back to 1907, when recent upgrades such as paved streets
and electric street lights gave downtown Hinsdale a new modern look and technological advances such as typewriters and telephones
transformed the way businesses operated.
Objects from the collection of the Historical Society tell stories of shops of that era and the people who ran them. Featured items include a
ladder used at Bohlanders (later known as Hollands) Hardware for 120 years, and a leaded glass sign for an early location of Papenhausen
Tailors. Photos from the Societys archives allow visitors to see streetscapes and store interiors. Long-time Hinsdale residents may recognize
markets such as Reinekes and Stebens, both of which lasted well beyond World War II.
The exhibit runs through October 31st, 2007.
