By a 4-2 vote last night, the Hinsdale Village Board approved the concept of relocating the R. Harold Zook home and studio, currently at 327 S. Oak St., to Katherine Legge Memorial Park, subject to approval of a lease agreement between the Village and the Hinsdale Historical Society.

The lease agreement, which will cover various obligations, terms and services between the parties, will be considered by the Village Board at its next regular meeting, on April 19.

In the meantime, the Society will immediately contract with house mover Dillabaugh, Inc. and other specialists to begin preparing the Zook property for the move to KLM in early May. The developer-owner of the property has set that time period as a deadline for removal of the structures, or they will be demolished so the lot can be redeveloped with a new house.

The move will involve cutting the house in three sections and lifting it from its foundation, lifting the studio-garage from its foundation in one piece, and cutting most of the five-foot high, 18-inch wide garden wall into sections and freeing it from its foundation.

The structures will be loaded on five trucks that will move them about one mile south to the park in one day. The structures will be placed on new foundations at the park, rejoined, sealed and otherwise made initially secure in their new setting. More extensive rehabilitation of the structures will come later as funds are raised.

Much complicated work remains to be done in the next 30 days. Particular needs at the moment are various construction services, public relations, a video record/documentary and fund raising. If you can help, please respond to this e-mail.
