American Legion

Originally formed by war-weary veterans, the American Legion is a national patriotic veterans’ organization that focuses on service to veterans, military members, and local communities.

Chartered by Congress in September 1919, membership quickly grew to over one million as local posts rapidly sprang up across the country.  Today, the Legion has grown into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States with membership over two million in more than 13,000 posts worldwide.

Hinsdale’s chapter, #250, was one of the earliest formed and still very active in the community.  Annually, they host Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day services, offer scholarships to high school students, support local scout troops, and provide honor guard at active duty and veteran funerals.
